Bodø-based newspaper Avisa Nordland gave the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra’s debut album a score of five out of a possible six. The debut album for the world’s northernmost orchestra features works by the world’s northernmost composer, Ole Olsen. The CD features the symphonic poem Åsgaardsreien, Symphony No. 1 and the first ever recording of the Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra. Release date: June 9.
WORLD’S NORTHERNMOST PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND COMPOSER
When the world’s northernmost orchestra shall release an album, what could be more natural than doing it with music from the world’s northernmost composer, Ole Olsen from Hammerfest? The Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra has clasped the North Norwegian composer to their bosom through several concerts, and now on an album too. The trombone concerto featured on the programme in both St. Petersburg in November 2010 and on the tour of China in January 2011, with principal conductor Christian Lindberg as soloist. The orchestra performed the two other orchestral works – the symphonic poem Åsgaardsreien and Symphony No. 1 in G major – during its concert at the Northern Lights Festival in Tromsø in late January 2011.
DEBUT ALBUM SHOWING QUALITY
The Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra recorded its debut album at Kulturhuset in Harstad in February with Swedish record company BIS. The orchestra has signed a five-year contract with the well reputed Swedish record company, which involves the release of one album per year. BIS has released a huge number of albums featuring orchestras and artists from around the globe, and it is a major achievement for a young orchestra to enter into such a contract.
Releasing an album is important to show the quality of the orchestra. Good reviews in national and international publications will be of great significance for the Arctic Philharmonic Orchestra. If the album enters markets such as China sales could explode. The first album features works by a composer who is relatively unknown internationally, Ole Olsen, but in time the orchestra will also record standard works that will be easier to compare with other orchestras.
